What is Ultra Density Optical?
What is so special about UDO drives and media?
UDO drives like blu-ray uses a blue laser technology, as opposed to the red laser that CD, DVD, and MO drives use. The benefit of using a blue-violet laser (405nm) is that it has a shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm), which makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision. This allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space. That means it's possible to fit more data on the UDO disc even though it's the same size as a MO disc. This together with the change of numerical aperture to 0.7 is what enables UDO discs to hold 30GB for UDO1 and 60GB for UDO2. UDO media is designed to be used in libraries interchangably with your current MO media. Unfortunately UDO drives cannot read MO discs If you intend to keep your MO media you will also need an optical drive.
Is UDO worth the switch from MO or Tape drives?
UDO is a superior data archiving technology to Tape or MO. True Worm technology available for UDO media ensures that important data may not be rewritten or altered in any way. The recording surface is phase changed and the physical record is permanent. Other backup technologies cannot assure this level of Data integrity. WORM for UDO drives meets all international regulatory requirements for data archival. It is ideal for applications that require records be archived in an unalterable, non-erasable format for legal admissibility.
What about back up speeds or data costs? You can expect faster access times and a lower cost per Gigabyte when switching to UDO drives and media from MO. Data is up to 84% cheaper than MO per GB. Backup speeds go up to 8MB/s, which is 33% faster than MO drives. So why wait? Are you still uncertain if UDO1 or UDO2 is the right for your business? Then call Micro Technologies and ask if UDO is right for you.
